USS Laffey: Tier X American Premium Destroyer 1944

USS Laffey, an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer, was commissioned in February 1944. Before the end of the year, she had already taken part in the Allied landings in Normandy, as well as in several amphibious operations in the Philippines. On April 16, 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, USS Laffey came under massive attack by Japanese aircraft. Thanks to the incredible efforts of her crew, the destroyer survived six kamikaze hits—any one of which could have sent a larger ship to the bottom. After expensive repairs, Laffey continued her service in the U.S. Navy until the mid-1970s.

During the latter, USS Laffey survived major damage from six kamikaze strikes and four bomb hits. She survived the onslaught and was returned to service. She continued in active United States Naval service until 1975, being the last of her class retired from the United States Navy.

In battle, Laffey is a Main Battery focused Destroyer. While her 127mm guns do not have the best ballistics, her toolkit will allow her to stay in the fight. She combines several powerful characteristics including good-for-her-tier concealment, Improved Defensive AA Fire, and an improved Specialized Repair Teams consumable. Crucially, Laffey has a variant of the Burst Fire mechanic—similar to Spanish cruisers—that fires 3 salvoes in a short period of time at the cost of increased reload, thereby allowing her to make quick hard-hitting attacks. Additionally, like the new Tech Tree branch of American destroyers, Laffey also has the Time-Based Smoke Generator Consumable, allowing the deployment of smoke almost on demand if used wisely.

As trade offs, her torpedoes are shorter in range and longer in reload compared to Gearing, and her smoke capacity is not very high. Combining this with low average speed as well as a small Hitpoint pool for a Tier X destroyer, Laffey will have to pick her battles but can survive an extended fight if the situation calls for one.

Laffey will excel in the hands of those players who can maximize the impact of their improved firepower through the use of her Burst Fire and Smoke Generator.
