Commissioned in 1939, HMS Belfast, the second of the Edinburgh class, encountered a German mine early in World War II and underwent repairs until 1942. In 1943, she escorted Arctic convoys and played a role in the destruction of the Scharnhorst during the Battle of the North Cape. The following year, she supported the Allied landings in Normandy. From 1950 to 1952, the cruiser saw action in the Korean War. Since 1971, she has been moored on the river Thames as a museum ship.
