Mengchong was a warship used in China in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. It had solid, leather-covered sides that allowed the archers to fire from behind cover and protected the rowers. The mengchong was used as a cover ship.

During the Battle of Red Cliffs (208–209), the combined armies of the Wu and Shu states confronted the forces led by Cao Cao, the ruler of the Wei kingdom. During the course of the battle, the allied fleet tricked Cao Cao by sending him ships laden with flammable materials. After the first ships caught fire, the flames quickly spread through Wei's entire fleet and destroyed it—Cao Cao had earlier chained his ships together from stem to stern, possibly to reduce rolling and seasickness among his men.
