Ōta - Tier IX Premium Japanese Cruiser

Ōta represents a hypothetical rebuild of an improved Agano-class cruiser, with her main battery replaced by six twin 100mm mounts to provide additional anti-aircraft firepower to the Imperial Japanese Navy. She is named in honour of the river Ōta in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Key Features and Battle Tips

Key Features

  • Rapid-Fire Armament: Twin 100mm mounts deliver a blistering rate of fire with high DPM and an improved base HE penetration of 30mm.
  • Stealth and Speed: Excellent base concealment paired with an improved Engine Boost and Exhaust Smoke Generator for agile repositioning.
  • Specialized Utility: Equipped with Submarine Surveillance to counter submerged threats.
  • Ballistic Limitations: Low-caliber shells feature floaty arcs and a relatively short firing range, making long-range gunnery challenging.
  • Fragile Survivability: Thin armor plating, a low HP pool, and a standard Repair Party leave little margin for error against incoming fire.
  • No Hydroacoustic Search: Lacks Hydroacoustic Search to screen incoming torpedoes, requiring caution in smoke screens.

Battle Tips

  • Maximize Penetration: Consider taking the Inertia Fuse for HE Shells (IFHE) skill to push HE penetration past the 32mm threshold, allowing you to reliably damage the bow and stern plating of same-tier battleships.
  • Leverage Smoke for Open-Water Firing: Combine your Exhaust Smoke Generator with Engine Boost to maintain high-speed maneuverability while maintaining sustained fire without relying strictly on static island cover.
  • Flank and Ambush: Use your low concealment to establish flanking crossfires near key objectives rather than attempting to trade hits head-on at long range.
  • Use Torpedoes Defensively: The twin quadruple 610mm launchers hit hard, but their 10km range places you well within dangerous return-fire territory; treat them primarily as an area-denial or ambush tool.
  • Play Cautiously around Submarines: Without Hydroacoustic Search, reserve your Submarine Surveillance for moments when a submarine reveals its position with a nearby sonar ping.
  • Manage Consumable Downtime: Disengage before your smoke generator expires—a single well-placed battleship salvo can quickly end your match during defensive cooldowns.
