HMS Theseus: Tier VIII British Premium Light Aircraft Carrier 1946
HMS Theseus, A light carrier of the Colossus class, the most numerous class of light aircraft carriers in the Royal Navy, occupying an intermediate position between the Illustrious-class heavy carriers and escort carriers. To reduce costs and expedite construction, technologies used in building merchant ships were employed. As part of the UN forces, Theseus actively participated in the Korean War. Later, she was refitted for service in Training Squadron, Home Fleet. In 1956, the ship was placed in reserve.

HMS Theseus Commemorative Flag
HMS Theseus, a Colossus-class light carrier, was commissioned in January 1946, becoming the third Royal Navy ship to be named after Theseus, a famous hero of Greek mythology. It was too late for the ship to participate in World War II, but the carrier had an impressive combat record during the Korean War and participated in the Suez Crisis before she was placed in reserve and finally broken up in 1962.
Key Features
- Blend of Characteristics: Theseus combines features somewhat similar to the Indomitable.
- Aircraft Squadrons: Theseus has only two small squadrons of high-speed, survivable aircraft.
- Torpedo Bombers: The first squadron consists of torpedo bombers that carry a large number of torpedoes per drop. However, each torpedo deals low damage individually.
- Skip Bombs: The second squadron carries one high-damage skip bomb per plane. These bombs have a unique feature: they are extremely inaccurate on the first skip but become more accurate after the first skip.
- Average Plane Regeneration Time: Theseus has an average plane regeneration time, allowing for somewhat sustainable losses.
- Limitations:
- Limited Hangar Space: Theseus has very limited hangar space.
- Poor Aircraft Maneuverability: Her aircraft suffer from poor maneuverability.
- Lack of Secondaries and Long-Range AA: Defending her own hull can be challenging due to the absence of secondaries and long-range anti-aircraft capabilities.
Gameplay
- Fast-Attacking Carrier: Theseus excels as a fast-attacking carrier, capable of maintaining pressure on the enemy.
- Minimize Plane Losses: To maximize effectiveness, captains should be cautious and minimize plane losses during engagements.
- Against Battleships: Theseus is effective against enemy battleships due to the fast travel time of her aircraft. She can set fires and floods on these larger targets.
- Skip Bombers: Precise aim with her skip bombers allows Theseus to deal heavy damage to lighter targets.
- Team Coordination: Captains should coordinate with teammates to focus on striking targets already engaged by others.
- Challenging Aircraft Maneuverability: The poor maneuverability of Theseus’ aircraft makes spotting and attacking her own targets more difficult.
