The Battle-class destroyers, incorporating enhanced anti-aircraft (AA) defenses, were designed by the Admiralty between 1942 and 1943, drawing on the lessons learned from wartime experiences. Among them was destroyer HMS Somme, which was commissioned in 1943. She stood apart from her predecessors due to her improved main battery artillery. The ship was named after one of the biggest battles of World War I. HMS Somme was never commissioned and remained unclaimed after the end of hostilities in 1945. She was demolished on the stocks.

HMS Somme Commemorative Flag
The Brodie helmet, patented by John L. Brodie in 1915, replaced the cloth or leather headgear used by British servicemen at the beginning of World War I. It was the first headgear designed with the combat conditions of the Western Front in mind. The Brodie helmet gained widespread recognition as an emblematic symbol of World War I and was featured on the coat of arms of HMS Somme, a ship that served from 1918 to 1932.
