Battle Tips
If you’re comfortable with pure gunboat gameplay, you’ll quickly feel at home aboard Viking. She is a destroyer focused solely on her guns, lacking torpedo armament. Her main battery sports a large caliber for a destroyer, at 152mm, and boasts good AP and HE penetration, high alpha damage, solid overall damage per minute, and a great firing range.
What makes her stand out is her armor scheme. Her midsection is covered in 50mm plating, which makes her surprisingly resistant to HE, especially from smaller calibers. This, alongside her long-lasting Smoke Generator, allows you to stay close to Key Areas and support your team by contesting and defending them, while using her Engine Boost when you need to disengage or dodge torpedoes. While her improved armor offers great protection against HE, it can also allow enemy AP shells to arm more easily, especially larger calibers like 203mm, and deal heavy damage to you, so you should be mindful of opponents with such guns.
Once the key areas are taken care of, she shifts into a mid- to long-range gunboat role and supports her team by dealing damage to enemy ships. Against battleships and angled targets, focus on HE shells: try to set multiple fires, and aim for the vulnerable sections of cruisers to get the most penetration damage. When you have a broadside target, you can switch to AP shells and deal more consistent penetration damage against most ship types. She is quite slow, though, and with her high detectability, you’ll need to stay alert to enemy ambushes, as most of her peers will be able to outspot you.
