Yashima was a further development of Yamato-class battleships, also known as the Super Yamato class. This project was to be armed with 510 mm main battery guns and was planned for order under the 1942 shipbuilding program. "Yashima" translates from Japanese as “Eight Islands”, which is one of the ancient poetic names for Japan.

The project of a battleship developed shortly before Japan entered World War II (Design A-150). The design of the ship called for a main battery of six 510 mm guns in three twin turrets. In all other respects, the ship's characteristics were similar to those of Yamato-class battleships.
