World of Warships Submarines: How to Win 5 Stars. Guide by Kiorysu

Halloween Submarines Guide: How to Win 5 Stars

by Kiorysu on Reddit

Hey guys I've seen a lot of questions about the submarine gamemode and on how to complete it 5 stars (normal/hard). I've been able to test the gamemode while in Flamu's division (some of you might have seen someone named Joestar there) and we tried out a few tactics and figured out the following:

First of all completing the other older operations 5 stars will give you other subs and in my opinion Gerfalcon is the most important one out of the bunch since it has good camo, 1:30 submerged and some very good torpedo power while being fast. You can definitely do this in other subs though.

Doing the event:

The Runner: You need someone that is the designated runner (preferably in a Zipper or Gerfalcon) that spots the castle located on the top of the map or you won't have enough time to do all the objectives, this person should go full speed towards the castle and on the way torp some stuff here and there for the ones in the back to clean up. The castle won't be visible but if you get right next to the island inside of the very small harbor (possibly submerged, not sure if on surface triggers it) you will complete the objective and remove the timer counting down.

Doing the run in a Barracuda is difficult, I would recommend the Gerfalcon since it can stay underwater for 1:30, has freezing torps forwards and normal torps in the back, good camo and doesn't have to be exposed long. Since you don't always have the Gerfalcon you can unlock the Zipper easier, it is amazing for the castle run it since you can pretty much stay underwater for short times but replenish oxygen almost as fast as you surface, giving the bots a very small window of hitting you. Basically in the Zipper if you see the enemy turn the guns you submerge again with a near full tank.

The rest of the team: So with someone spotting the castle, you don't have the timer counting down and you now just need 1 or 2 people spotting the coastal installations (make sure to get them behind the castle too) to complete that objective while the rest of the team sweeps up the kills that are needed.

Finally: when you've done all the objectives and the only thing left is kill Rasputin, you just focus your fire on it and it will melt pretty quickly (remember to use the rear tubes on the Gerfalcon if you are playing it).

Other tips:

Make sure to throw a freeze torp in any ship close to you, it will disable the ship and it will be unable to shoot you and sit still in the water. (only Rasputin sometimes slowly moves while stunned, the rest should slowly stop dead in the water)

On shore installations cannot spot you, you don't need to shoot at them with secondaries or anything, just kill the ships on route for the people that aren't the runner.

In the final area there will be some DDs hunting you down, if you freeze torp them you can easily hit them with normal torps afterwards since they will stop moving, watch out for their depth charges though, don't go underneath them.

Lastly it's a really fun event, lots of mechanics and some solid gameplay time in it, the devs really put out something fun and most of all beautiful and I think we can congratulate them on it. At the moment I don't think submarines will have a good place in PvP because of the frustrating gameplay it will have for the people getting torped, but I think it's a great addition into PvE at least. Only time will tell.

Hopefully this helps you all out, thanks for reading and good luck.

TL;DR: Get a runner to sit submerged in the harbor in front of the castle to spot it and do the rest of the objectives without the timer to get it done easily.

World of Warships 0.7.10: Devs Bulletin: British DD's, Submarines, Ranked Spirit, New Supply Sector, New Matchmaker, Torpedo Warning,

Developer Bulletin for Update 0.7.10.

This Update continues the British arc, as well as bringing a lot of exciting novelties to World of Warships. What you get is another month of Royal Navy, new Halloween missions and features, Ranked sprint, and much more!

IMPORTANT! Because the Update is still being tested, the information in this Bulletin is tentative, and reflects the state of game development at the time of its publication. Changes and new features may be removed entirely or implemented differently by the time the Update goes live. Screenshots, specific values of certain characteristics, and details of in-game mechanics will not necessarily be relevant after the Update is released.

Royal Navy and British Destroyers

The Royal Navy event is in full swing in World of Warships. Having taken part in it, players can receive brand new Tier V–VIII British destroyers and be the first to try them out in battle. The remaining British destroyers are undergoing final stages of testing at the moment.
You will not be able to get Sovereigns in the new version, but they can be exchanged for quite an extensive list of valuable rewards. You can also keep accumulating Guineas for Tier VIII Premium destroyer Cossack, making it available with a huge discount.
The new Royal Navy phase offers another 4 Stages, with each lasting 1 week. Each Stage has four Directives that contain a specific number of missions to be completed. Having completed a Stage, Directive, or mission, you will receive a corresponding reward, including various game items, Guineas, and new Halloween containers. You can complete the missions simultaneously, but you will only be able to access the next Directive after completing a certain number of missions from the previous one. Missions can be completed simultaneously and across any number of battles, unless indicated otherwise. Don't worry if you are unable to complete something on the fly, because all the Directives are available for completion until the end of the Stage.

Halloween Port

The Halloween Port will welcome you with its bewitching mysticism. Its emerald waters, steep cliffs, and a majestic castle suit well the place where the Forces of Darkness reign.

Saving Transylvania and Sunray in the Darkness

This year's celebration of Halloween is set to bring joy to players with the return of familiar operations: Saving Transylvania and Sunray in the Darkness.
To complete Operation Saving Transylvania, you will have to gather all your courage again and accompany the ship called Transylvania to a place safe from the Forces of Darkness, protecting it from the attacks of catapults and Zikasa ships along the way. However, making it all the way will not mean you are safe, because the meanest enemy awaits you at end—ship Rasputin!
Sunray in the Darkness encourages players to band together against the Dark Forces that strive to break through the open portal. You will be aided by magic security towers, bestowed with power to close the portal again. Your main goal will be to protect them from a host of enemy ships. Repulse the attack of the Forces of Darkness until the portal closes and keep your eyes on the updated and advanced Filth, which will deduct your ship's HP just by touching it. Those who consider themselves die-hard slayers of the restless Forces of Darkness will have a chance to complete the Hard version—to be played in divisions—to forge their spirit in more dire circumstances.

Terror of the Deep

After completing the previous year's operations, get ready for a unique opportunity to complete a fresh operation entitled “Terror of the Deep” on submarines!
Submarines are the long-awaited new type in World of Warships. However, they will be available exclusively in the new operation. While steering this new type, you have to master a new dimension—depth. You will be able to maneuver freely between the water’s surface, periscope depth, and deep waters. Every change in depth will affect your visibility and attack capabilities. You will get a chance to see the beauty of the underwater world and use submersion as a tactical maneuver—you can attack the enemy with your bow armament, and, on some submarines, having passed your enemy underneath, deliver a salvo from the stern.
Torpedo tubes are going to be your primary weapon on submarines, and each torpedo can be launched independently. Besides this, each submarine can carry different types of torpedoes. In the new operation, there are going to be two of them: “standard” with considerable speed, and that are quite familiar to you from playing on destroyers, and “freezing” torpedoes, which are faster and deal less damage, but when they hit the target ship, disable her with all her systems for a certain period of time.
One should not forget about an entirely new parameter for us, which is the oxygen supply. Keep an eye on its level — your submarines will replenish it at the surface and spend it when they dive. If you run out of oxygen, the submarine will initiate emergency surfacing.
Become familiar with the new type, and break into the World of Darkness. Complete all challenges, with each challenge more difficult than the previous one and face the ultimate foe—Battleship Rasputin. You’ll have a choice of standard or more difficult modes. Select the standard mode if you’d like to get familiar with the new submarine mechanics, while a more difficult variant will allow you to truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the game.

New Camouflages

During the public test only, apart from those from previous Halloween celebration that you enjoyed, you will receive new camouflages for the following ships: North Carolina (Leviathan), Kiev (Razorworm), Z-23 (Steel Rat), and the first animated camouflage in the game—Mogami (Octopus). These camouflages resemble your opponents from the new operation; we hope that they’ll be a welcome surprise for you!

Ranked Sprint

A new format of Ranked battles will become available with the release of the new version, with two short and action-packed seasons, available for Tier V ships in 6х6 and 8х8. Within the season, players will be divided into two leagues: rank 1 to 5, and rank 5 to 10. Join the battle as a Division with 2 players from your league or on your own. One of the special features of this sprint season is that it’s going to be shorter than the main season. The Sea Wolves league will not be available.
Though this new format is intended mostly for the new players, all players are welcome to take part in the Sprint. Team up with your friends and good luck!

Torpedo Warning

A fresh and pleasant change for players will be new torpedo threat detection mechanics. The purpose of these new mechanics is to reduce the number of false torpedo warnings about torpedoes that are not dangerous. We hope that these warnings will help to improve the effectiveness of your maneuvers in battle.

Based on your numerous requests, in the upcoming update, we’ve introduced a “soft” limit of 4 destroyers in random battles. This limit comes into effect when the first player in the queue waited for a battle for less than three minutes.
In co-op battles, no more than 4 destroyers and 4 battleships are allowed.

We’ve introduced a new section called “Supply”. If you log in to the game regularly, you’ll receive rewards. So hurry and claim your reward!
Be amongst the first to test the changes we’ve made in 0.7.10! Collect your rewards and share your impressions and feedback with WG!

Minotaur, The Paper Ship by World of Warships

While considering the various existing Neptune-class cruiser designs, the Directorate of Naval Construction of the British Admiralty came to the conclusion that the firepower of 114 mm guns used as the ship's dual-purpose artillery was obviously not enough, and that new cruisers should be designed to carry 152 mm dual-purpose guns.

Six-barreled Bofors mounts were considered for the AA artillery, but the Naval Ordnance Department insisted on increasing the small calibre artillery to 76 mm. The reason behind this was a gradual increase in both the weight of potential enemy aircraft, and their speed. Another reason was the assumption that their potential enemy could have anti-ship missiles within their arsenal. Larger dimensions of artillery mounts led to an excessive increase of the standard water displacement of the designed cruiser, reaching 15,500 tons with a ship length of 174 meters.

As an alternative, by 1947, the Minotaur-class cruiser project was created. The underlying idea was to create a ship that could be on par with cruiser Worcester, built on the basis of American technology and armament systems. However, it turned out that Minotaur's 152 mm guns were not compatible with US ammunition, and its 76 mm twin gun mount could not be installed in place of the British mount that weighed in at 35 tons. Besides that, it was equipped with an automatic ammunition supply mechanism from the under-turret compartment, while the American mount weighed just 14 tons but was unequipped with a similar automation device. The British mount’s rate of fire was double that of the US version. Just as its US counterpart, the ship was primarily designed to counter enemy aviation and repel attacks from enemy light forces. The ship’s crew was planned to be 1,030 persons. In contrast to Worcester, the ship carried torpedo launchers, but lacked aviation armament.

The final design of the cruiser increased belt armour thickness from 89 to 102 mm. In addition to that, the main battery magazines were protected with 32 mm "armour boxes", a feature typical to British cruisers. The armour above the propulsion was as thick as 32 mm, going up to 51 mm above the main battery magazines. Besides that, just under the main armour deck of the magazines there was 19 mm thick splinter proof plating. The fore-end transverse Armour bulkheads were reinforced to become 127 mm, even thicker than the Armour belt, while the aft transverse Armour bulkheads had the same thickness as the belt Armour, at 102 mm. The propulsion unit was separated from the main battery magazines with the help of 32 mm transversely bulkheads. It also had internal bulkheads of similar thickness, dividing it into compartments with the design intention to improve the survivability of the propulsion if hit by an enemy torpedo. The Barbette's of the main battery turrets were protected with differentiated Armour ranging from 32 to 51 mm, while the compartment housing the steering gears was reliably protected with the help of 90 mm Armour deck, 127 mm Armour belt, and transverse bulkheads with thickness that ranged between 127 mm to 81 mm. The result was a cruiser that outmatched Worcester in terms of armament, but with inferior Armour protection. The underlying concept did not result in Armour protection capable of withstanding shell hits from ships of the same type, but it did provide good protection for withstanding the close explosions of bombs.

The engineers started to design the main battery artillery during World War II, completing the design stage only by 1949. It was the first time that 152 mm gun mounts had been equipped with a separate-case loading system, instead of the conventional separate loading system. Within the previously used separate loading system, the charge was loaded into the gun in silk powder bags or powder containers, while under the new system the charge was placed in a metal case, helping to improve the rate of fire. During further development of the mount, a lot of issues occurred relating to the hydraulic drive units, which were the basis for the turret operation automation and ammunition supply control. Afterwards this mount was used on the Tiger-class cruisers that were completed by the early 1960's.

Several variations of the ship’s design were developed, with each of them differing from one another in terms of water displacement and dimensions.

Design DescriptionDisplacement

The standard water displacement was planned to be 13,870 tons, but increased to 14,228 tons due to Armour reinforcement. Maximum displacement was supposed to be 16,760 tons. Our analysis showed that the sketch design developed at that time was of very high quality, with present-day calculations indicating that the maximum displacement would have been 16,977 tons.

Propulsion and Speed Performance

The ship’s propulsion was designed with power capacity of 110,000 hp, allowing the ship to run at a maximum speed of 31,5 knots. It comprised four boilers and four geared-turbine units that set the four propeller shafts in motion.

Main Battery

Comprising of ten 6 inch (152 mm)/50 QF Mark V dual-purpose guns, placed in Mk 26 twin gun mounts. The mount weighed 156 tons, with a rate of fire that varied from 15 to 20 shots per minute, with a firing range of 22.8 km for an Armour piercing shell, and a barrel life of 1,400 shots. The reloading speed of these guns was 3 seconds, with a muzzle velocity for shells of 805 m/s, and each shell's weight at 58.85 kg. Each gun could be aimed with the help of a hydraulic drive unit.

Dual-purpose Artillery

Consisting of sixteen QF 3in (76 mm) Mark VI guns, placed in eight twin mounts, each equipped with an automatic loading mechanism. The rate of fire was 90 shots per minute, with a muzzle velocity of 1,036 m/s. The firing range at the 45˚ inclination angle reached 17.8 km, and 11.6 km at the 90˚ inclination angle.

There were plans to lay down a pair of these cruisers each year between 1951 and 1953 (six ships in total), with each pair of ships taking 3 years to build. However, these plans never materialised due to a lack of budget funds and a shift in the U.K.'s naval construction priorities in favour of aircraft carriers, as well as anti-submarine warfare forces and equipment.

Minotaur in World of Warships

In World of Warships, Minotaur is a U.K. Tier X cruiser. What you really need to know is that this ship is classified as a light cruiser, featuring good manoeuvrability and dynamic acceleration, but with very poor Armour protection. By making one wrong step you risk leaving your allies without your support.

This cruiser has a unique peculiarity in common with other British cruisers: her guns can fire only Armour piercing shells. Ten 152 mm guns boast a fast reload time, and their shells have reduced arming threshold and perfect penetration angles that helps with minimising the number of ricochets and over-penetrations. At the same time, the high traverse speed of its turrets allows you to shift guns from one side to the other in seconds. Though the guns can't boast very good ballistic shell trajectory, you can explore new horizons and should find it very convenient to use islands as cover for the weak Armour, while still being capable of delivering fire from behind them. By the way, these dual-purpose 152 mm guns together with 76.2 mm/70 Mk VI anti-aircraft guns can hold a very unpleasant surprise for enemy aircraft, even without the Defencive AA Fire consumable.

In terms of weapons, this Brit can be described as armed on all points. It carries four torpedo launchers, with two placed on either side of the ship. Each of these is loaded with four torpedoes that have a firing range of 10 km. If you manage to skillfully use the short detectability range of the ship and her ability to fire torpedoes individually, you can prepare a true torpedo apocalypse for your enemies.

You'll be impressed with the wide selection of consumables that this cruiser offers: Damage Control Party, Repair Party, Hydro acoustic Search, Smoke Generator, and Surveillance Radar placed in one slot provide a huge variety of tactical options for the ship. You should pay special attention to the Repair Party consumable, characterised by increased efficiency and capable of restoring more than half of the ship's HP during a short period of time.

The cruiser offers at least two styles of play: from a relatively calm approach that benefits from the use of the Smoke Generator, to a highly aggressive hunt for destroyers making use of the Surveillance Radar. Irrespective of which of the two styles you choose, you have to be extremely careful, keeping a close eye on enemy ships equipped with the Surveillance Radar. Just one accurate salvo from an enemy can instantly reduce your ship's hit points to zero.
