A Detailed Look at Tier X Special Upgrades: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

To be clear, these are his personal opinions and he welcomes any feedback and your opinions and what do you really think about these upgrades.

Buffs with Negligible Downsides:

Yueyang (Slot 6) Recently Updated
  • Her slot 6 mainstays is either Main Battery Modification 3 which have the stats: -12% to main battery loading time, -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • The torpedo focused captains will choose Torpedo Tubes Modification 3 which have the stats: -15% to torpedo tube reload time, +50% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated.
  • Her new upgrade gives: -15% to smoke duration, -30% to smoke emission time, -10% to main battery loading time, -10% to torpedo tube reload time.
  • Wargaming's way to make an already good destroyer borderline OP. No need to choose whether to go for gun build or torpedo build since new upgrade gives 10% bonus to both guns and torpedoes without downside to turret traverse or torpedo tube incapacitation chance. The only ‘downside’ is the nerfed smoke generator. Yes, you heard that right, the downside to this upgrade is that she will now get worse smoke generator.
  • Wargaming totally like anyone that is using smoke, Yueyang these days, totally most player in random battles (and basically everyone in clan and ranked battles) are not using radar, am I right guys? Players TOTALLY choose smoke over radar in their Yueyang and the nerfed smoke generator is totally a good downside to the improved DPM on both guns and torpedoes. Its not like Yueyang is going to be made borderline OP compared to others and totally its not going to be the ever more meta tier 10 DD's

Essentially Buffs:

Conqueror (Slot 5)

  • Her slot 5 mainstay is the Concealment System Modification 1 which have the following stats: -10% to detectability radius and +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • Her new slot 5 upgrade have the following stats: +13% to main battery traverse speed, -80% to steering gears repair time, -40% to rudder shift time.
  • Although the 10% detectability looks like a nerf if unequipped. Note that Conqueror still has (assuming captain have CE and camouflage on) a 13.1km concealment which is still pretty competitive and within the ranges of other tier 10 BBs While the buff to main battery traverse speed cancels out the nerf from the slot 6’s MBM 3 which is a main stay for her as well. Not to mention the huge 40% buff to rudder shift speed. Now Mr. Cancer will be able to spam enemy BB while dodging the enemy BB’s shells much more comfortably while the only tradeoff is that she got increased concealment, but because her concealment is already too good that even without CSM 1 she has similar detection as other tier 10 BB so that’s not much of a nerf to her.

Yamato (Slot 6)  Recommended by Flamu
  • Yamato’s slot 6 mainstay is the Main Battery Modification 3 which have the following stats: -12% to main battery loading time and -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • The new slot 6 upgrade have the following stats: -19% to main battery traverse speed, -12% to main battery loading time, -11% to maximum dispersion of main battery shells.
  • Essentially, one is giving up an extra 6% of main battery traverse speed (note this means her turrets even turn slower) but gives an extra 11% tighter dispersion on her shells. This will undoubtedly reinforce her somewhat obsolete position as a mid-range bow-on Battleship which unlike other T10 BBs relies on quality of shells rather than the quantity of shells fired at the enemy.

Großer Kurfürst (Slot 6)

  • Her slot 6 mainstay is again: Main Battery Modification 3 which have the following stats: -12% to main battery loading time and -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • Her new slot 6 upgrade have the following stats: -7% to main battery traverse speed, -15% to main battery loading time, -8% to main battery maximum firing range, -10% to secondary battery loading time).
  • This means all GK loses is only the 8% to her firing range (she now only gets 19km) while she gets: an extra 6% faster turret traverse, an extra 3% main battery reload speed and an extra 10% faster reload speed on her secondaries. Essentially a ship that is better overall but must stay at the frontlines to use its full potential. I am for one welcome for the change. This change means she shouldn’t duke it out with enemy BB at long range. But hold fire and open up at mid-range and slowly closing her distance to make use of her strong secondaries. The French BB looks like she had a chance at challenging the GK’s secondaries king status. But this will reaffirm her status at tier 10 as the ship that you shouldn’t get close to.

Republique (Slot 6)

  • Her slot 6 mainstay is also Main Battery Modification 3 which have the following stats: -12% to main battery loading time and -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • Her new slot 6 upgrade have the following stats: -19% to main battery traverse speed, -18% to main battery loading time, -16% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • Essentially, she is giving up an extra 6% of main battery traverse speed (slower), and 16% main battery range, but gets an extra 5% reload speed. I would say it’s a win since she still retains a very healthy 22km-not like with her dispersion she is going to get much use out of the 26km she originally had, but she now gets better reload speed at 19.7 second. This will reinforce her position as a mid-range battleship that relies on reload to catch enemy off guard and uses her own agility to doge shells.

Hindenburg (Slot 5) Recently Updated

  • Her slot 5 mainstay is the Concealment System Modification 1 which have the following stats: -10% to detectability radius and +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • Her new upgrade gives: -30% to rudder shift time, -70% to flooding recovery time, -50% to time of fire extinguishing, -50% to main battery repair time.
  • Basically, she loses out on (assuming captain have CE and camouflage on) 13.7-12.3=1.4km of detection and 5% dispersion of enemy shells fired at her while she gains several survivability buffs. This will undoubtedly make her spamming BB at range more comfortable and while she counters enemy cruisers and torpedoes better. She is already one of the more popular ships at tier 10 and I think WG made the right choice not to give her to much buffs without a small downside. I personally don’t see the 1.4km detection to make a huge impact in her as it doesn’t really interfere with her playstyle.

Shimakaze (Slot 6)  Recommended by Flamu
  • Her slot 6 mainstay is Torpedo Tubes Modification 3, this provides: 15% to torpedo tube reload time, +50% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated.
  • Her new upgrades has the following stats: -25% to torpedo tube reload time, +50% to the risk of torpedo tubes becoming incapacitated, -80% to torpedo tube traverse speed.
  • Basically, you get 10% faster torpedo reload, but in return, her torpedo tubes now traverse VERY slow. The 80% slower speed means her tubes traverse 5 degrees per second and it takes her a massive 36 second to turn around. Finally, her turrets are faster than her torpedo tubes! Generally, for a Shimakaze normal playstyle this won’t hinder her much, but whenever she’s in a pinch or when CQC with enemy ships this will be a big problem. I feel players will stay further way from action and spamming torpedoes from mid-range if equipped with this upgrade as everything on her turns so slowly and she just don’t have the ability to react quick enough.

Khabarovsk (Slot 5)

  • Her slot 5 mainstay is Steering Gears Modification 3 which provides: -80% to steering gears repair time and -40% to rudder shift time.
  • Her new upgrade gives: -13% to main battery traverse speed, -6% to main battery loading time, +8% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • This is not a bad trade at all, one sacrificed some mobility but in exchange gets improved gun handling, and the +8% main battery range somewhat offsets the worse rudder shift. This will certainly improve her damage potential while it will not be a big nerf to her mobility.

Zao (Slot 6)   Recommended by Flamu
  • Her slot 6 mainstay is the Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 which have the stats: +16% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • Her new upgrade has the following stats: -20% to rudder shift time, -7% to maximum dispersion of main battery shells, +8% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • This means she loses out on 8% firing range, but her shells have 7% better dispersion and she gets 20% better rudder shift time. Also a decent trade here, you lose 8% firing range, but you get 7% better dispersion (as if IJN dispersion and railgun arc isn’t enough), the 20% rudder shift time decrease can also cancel out the range nerf to a degree since you can zig zag around easier.

Grozovoi (Slot 6)

  • For her slot 6, most players choose Main Battery Modification 3 which have the following stats: -12% to main battery loading time and -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • Her new upgrades give: -7% to main battery traverse speed, -18% to main battery loading time, +10% to torpedo tube reload time.
  • Very easy math, one trade -10% torpedo reload for 20% faster turret traverse and 6% more DPM. A very simple and straight forward upgrade. Now her torpedoes will be slightly less usable, but she can challenge other DDs in gunfights better. Personally, I see it as a decent trade off since Grozovi’s main weapons are still her guns but not he torpedoes. In addition, anyone seek an AA build on her will be able to squeeze out more from her guns since BFT also decreases her main gun reload.

Worcester (Slot 5) Recently Updated Details Here

  • Now this ship is still in testing, but normally players should always go for Concealment system modification 1 which gives -10% detection range and +5% dispersion of enemy shells fired at you.
  • Her special upgrade gives: +10% to duration of Surveillance Radar, +20% to duration of Hydroacoustic Search, +20% to duration of Defensive AA Fire, -5% to detectability radius.
  • So basically, in exchange for being stealthier, she gets an overall nice buff to her consumables. This looks a buff too good to be true until you realized that her full Concealment build have 9.54 detection with 9.9km radar thus she can stealth radar and if she is spotted by DD she can pop the radar and be sure the DD is within her radar range. However, if one went for this special upgrade she now gets 10.07km detection and thus can not stealth radar. Overall, I think it should be a nice buff, heck in DM you can’t stealth radar but that haven’t been a problem for me yet.

Neutral, Big Tradeoff In One Area for Stat Buff in other Areas:

Minotaur (Slot 6) Recently Updated Details Here

  • For her slot 6, Players usually choose either MBM3 or gun DPM or the AA DPS upgrade; As to why unlike other ships I did not show the the exact stats is because her special upgrade is completely different to her normal upgrades so one can’t compare the two directly as you will see next.
  • Her special upgrades -30% to smoke duration, +300% to smoke emission time, -10% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • This is a somewhat questionable upgrade, its more akin to the ‘special upgrades’ rather than the new upgrades available on other ships. If stacked with smoke generator modification 1 she can behave like a low tier Perth or Huang Meh while she retains the ability of stationary smoke somewhat unlike the Perth. Of course, there is the downside of -10% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship, coupled with the amount of radar in high tier games, I think this upgrade is somewhat lacking.

Henry IV (Slot 5) Recently Updated Details Here

  • For her slot 5, Some choose the Concealment System Modification 1 (-10% to detectability radius. / +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship while some others choose steering Gears Modification 3 (-80% to steering gears repair time. / -40% to rudder shift time).
  • The new upgrade has the following stats: +10% to rudder shift time, +5% to detectability radius, -12% to main battery loading time, +8% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • Essentially one gains DPM and range, both of which can stack with whatever the player chooses in slot 6, while only lose out on detectability and rudder shift time. If you are a long range HE spammer, these nerfs are a tradeoff worth going for, since her concealment doesn’t really matter with her role as a long range HE spammer while her speed boost can cancel out the slight decrease in rudder shift, not to mention she is usually at long range so gets more reaction time. This will reinforce her position as the ultimate LONG range HE spammer while gives her a handy DPM buff. HOWEVER, HOWEVER, she now gives up all concealment related stuff, she will now be out spotted constantly so the teamplay oriented part of a cruiser-using stealth to cap or to flank the enemy-will have to be sacrificed. So, it all comes down to you as the player. Are you a long range HE spammer that places Average Damage above everything else? Or you value teamwork and flexibility as a cruiser more?

Moskva (Slot 5)

  • Most sane players go for Concealment System Modification 1 in slot 5 which have the following stats: -10% to detectability radius and +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • Her new upgrade gives: -13% to main battery traverse speed, -11% to maximum dispersion of main battery shells, +8% to main battery maximum firing range.
  • It’s basically like Henry IV’s module in that essentially one gains DPM, range and gun handling, however again, loses out on her already terrible concealment. The question remains again: Are you a long range HE spammer that places Average Damage above everything else? Or you value teamwork and flexibility as a cruiser more?

Z-52 (Slot 5)

  • Her slot 5 mainstay of course the Concealment System Modification 1 which have the following stats: -10% to detectability radius and +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • Her new upgrade gives: -5% to detectability radius, -10% to torpedo reload time
  • Very simple stats, she loses out 5% concealment in exchange she gets 10% faster torpedo reload. However, the worthiness of this upgrade is very questionable, she already has one of the worse DD detections in tier 10. The 5% is pretty significant in terms of DD fights. Indeed, many times one doesn’t just charge in a cap so early in battle, instead you wait for enemy to set smoke and then charge in. However, that certainly doesn’t work according to plan every time and if enemy DD choose to shadow her she will have a very hard time. The torpedo reload is a nice little buff though, this will make Z 52 very good at spamming torpedoes, in fact, assuming one took all torpedo reload related skills and upgrades, she will be able to spam 8 torpedoes every 62 seconds which is quite scary in the right situation.

Gearing (Slot 5)

  • Her slot 5 mainstay is Concealment system modification 1 which gives -10% detection range and +5% dispersion of enemy shells fired at you.
  • Her special upgrade gives: -15% to detectability radius, +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship, +15% to main battery loading time, +5% to torpedo tube reload time.
  • Essentially, one gets 5% better concealment but loses out on 15% of gun DPM and 5% torpedo DPM. Now a full concealment setup nets her 5.6km concealment. Yes, you read that right. 5.6km concealment.
  • What on Earth is Wargaming thinking? Shimakaze just got a buff so she gets 5.6km concealment and now this? This upgrade is bullshit, first it almost looks like it is made to specifically counter the Shimakaze. Secondly, it doesn’t really help when Gearing is fighting other DDs, since the decrease in gun DPM in very noticeable. So basically, this upgrade is a massive fuck off to Shimakaze (and Kagero and Yugumo who utilizes concealment to stay alive) but makes her essentially worse against all other enemy due to the decrease in DPM. I mean Gearing can shadow enemy DDs now so that is balance TM?

Montana (Slot 5)

  • Her slot 5 mainstay like nearly every other ship (save for Khabarovsk) in WoWs ever is the Concealment System Modification 1 which have the following stats: -10% to detectability radius and +5% to the maximum dispersion of enemy shells that fire on your ship.
  • Her new upgrade is as follows: -10% to flooding recovery time, -10% to time of fire extinguishing, -70% to steering gears repair time, -30% to rudder shift time.
  • Assuming she have concealment expert and camouflage on (which you should really have if you are in a tier 10 ship), her full concealment setup is 13.4km. While if she equips the new upgrade, her detection increases to 15.5km and she loses out on +5% of enemy dispersion fired at her. In return she is better against fires and flooding and have a better rudder shift. It’s hard to say whether this is a buff. While she now fares much better against cruisers and DDs and even BB salvos due to the buffs (and not to mention USN BBs gets the longest DCP time), she will likely be spotted first and under fire before her teammates. This also creates the problem where late game 1v1 its going to be very troublesome for her unless she can use terrain and islands to her advantage to neglect the massive concealment difference.

Des Moines (Slot 6)

  • Her slot 6 mainstay is split between the Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 which have the stats: +16% to main battery maximum firing range or MBM3 which have the following stats: -12% to main battery loading time and -13% to the main battery traverse speed.
  • Her new upgrade gives -40% to time for reaching full engine power (improves acceleration), -20% to rudder shift time and -10% to duration of Surveillance Radar.
  • WoW such an upgrade! While others can either go with more burst DPM or range to be more flexible, I can have an easier time dodging enemy shells and torpedoes, and my radar gets shorter duration!!! Best trade off ever! /s
  • I don’t know about you lot, but as far as I can see this isn’t very worth it. I think the range upgrade which gives DM more flexibility in positioning will only give DM more survivability than the improvement in ship handling will bring.

CVs:

I haven’t played CVs above tier 7 so I will not comment on it much. Please post your opinions:

  • Her mainstay in slot 6 is Air Groups Modification 3 which boosts +15% to attack aircraft survivability.
  • Her special upgrade is +30% to attack aircraft survivability, -5% to maximum aircraft speed.

Hakuryu (Slot 6)

  • Her mainstay in slot 6 is Air Groups Modification 3 which boosts +15% to attack aircraft survivability.
  • Her special upgrade is +5% to maximum aircraft speed +15% to fighter HP.
